Political Statement

Telstra, Wesfarmers, Bluescope and others

November 2023

Numerous Australian business leaders have endorsed an open letter denouncing antisemitism. The text advocates for fair treatment for all Australians, underscoring the principles of respect, inclusivity, and dignity. Published prominently as a double-page advertisement in newspapers, the appeal is complemented by an online platform entitled "Say No to Antisemitism."

It is an answer to the alarming surge in antisemitic incidents in Australia since the October 7 terrorist attack by Hamas on Israel and subsequent Israeli attacks in Gaza. The letter quotes a figure from the Executive Council of Australian Jewry that there has been a 482% rise in antisemitic incidents over the past seven weeks across Australia.

Business leaders who endorsed the letter include the Telstra chair John Mullen, the Wesfarmers chair Michael Chaney, BlueScope chair Jane McAloon, Macquarie Group chair Glenn Stevens, and the billionaires Lindsay Fox, Anthony Pratt and Solomon Lew. The list of signatures remains open and has reached 13,100+ signatories, including former state premiers, to date.

The letter is being described by supporters as one of the most powerful petitions of its kind in Australian public life, highlighting the collective commitment to upholding Australian values of multiculturalism and tolerance.
