Following the ban of the "One Love" captain's armband by the DFB (German Football Association) at the World Cup in Qatar, the German Supermarket chain Rewe announces the termination of its cooperation with the soccer association. The previous income from collectible picture booklets for the World Cup will be donated, the rest will be given away free of charge.
"For us, soccer is, among other things, fair play, tolerance and cohesion - we also uphold these values," said Lionel Souque, CEO of Rewe Group, explaining the decision. "We stand up for diversity - and soccer has to be diverse. We live this attitude and we defend this attitude - even against possible opposition. Fifa's scandalous attitude is absolutely unacceptable to me as CEO of a diverse company and as a soccer fan."
